Fostering Mathematical Thinking in Middle Schools
Teacher Quality Grant: 2012-2014

 

 

This Teacher Quality project aims to strengthen middle school teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching. This project is funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board under the Teacher Quality Grant Program—a federally funded effort providing grants to higher education institutions to promote improved instruction in mathematics and science for Texas school children by providing professional development for their teachers. This was originally a one-year project and we have received a second-year extension for it.

Project Goals

·        Increase the number of middle-school teachers who teach mathematics in a manner improve their students’ mathematical thinking and conceptual understanding

·        Strengthen middle school teachers’ content and content pedagogical knowledge

·        Increase student achievement in mathematics

·        Create professional learning communities to enhance the teaching profession of math teachers
