Course description: This class is to introduce students to explore how research is done in their fields of study. Students will give a short presentation on a current research paper of their choice based on a study of a refereed journal article. Each presentation will be 20 minutes long and 3 minute-long Q/A time will follow. A session chair and a questioner for each presentation will be assigned as well. The presentation must be prepared in either PowerPoint or PDF format. You are supposed to submit the journal article(either a hard copy or an electronic version) that you chose to study to me, the session chair, and the questioner no later than a week before you are to present. In addition to the article, the file containing the slides should be submitted by e-mail at least 24 hours in advance of your presentation.

Session chair's duties :The session chair's primary duties are to introduce the speakers and ensure the session proceeds according to schedule, and to facilitate a dialogue between the presenters and the audience. The session chair should introduce the presenter and the topic for the day, notify the presenter when 5 minutes are left, ask for questions following the presentation, and thank the presenter.

Questioner's duties: The questioner must read the article and prepare questions to ask the presenter during Q/A time.

Assignments: A couple of assignments will be given throughout the semester. All assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the due date.

Assignment 1 (Due Sept. 9) :
  • Watch the online video How to give a good research talk and give a bullet point summary of the suggestions given.
  • Search for a couple of websites that address the questions of how to design good PowerPoint presentations(slides)
