Using the notebook feature of Mathematica on Macintosh Systems

The notebook feature of Mathematica has been installed in Macintosh systems available in Bell Hall 130 (Math Lab). From the hard drive, double-click the Mathematica 3.0 icon inside the Mathematica 3.0 folder to start running Mathematica. After startup, you may start a new notebook by putting the arrow pointer on the File menu and choosing the New option, or load an existing Mathematica file by selecting the Open option.

After typing any Mathematica command, press SHIFT-RETURN (hold down the SHIFT key and press RETURN) to tell Mathematica to evaluate the input. Labels such as IN[n]:= and Out[n]= will be added automatically. The first calculation will take longer than subsequent calculations because the Mathematica kernel has to start up.

To save a notebook, put the arrow pointer on the File menu that appears to the left top of your screen, press the right mouse button and drag it on the Save option. To cut, copy, and paste cells, choose the corresponding option from the Edit menu to the right of the File menu. Close the notebook by clicking the little square on the upper left corner of the notebook. Maximize the size of the notebook by clicking the little square on the upper right corner of the notebook. Resize the notebook by dragging the lower right corner. Additional comments on Notebooks are contained in the previous and subsequent sections.

Balloon Help is available for tips on using a Macintosh system, accessible by clicking the question mark on the upper right corner of your screen.
