Course Information
You are responsible for the information presented below. Read it thoroughly.
Course Administration
- Math 1411 is divided into 3 Part-of-Term sections, 1411A, 1411B, and 1411C. Each section is 1-1/3 credit hours and lasts about 5 weeks. You can complete all three sections in one semester or several semesters, but you are encouraged to take the three sections consecutively.
- You will receive a grade of A, B, C, D or F at the end of each part-of-term section.
- If you earn a failing grade (D or F) you may re-take the part-of-term section that you failed in the following 5-week interval.
Each of the sections 1411A, 1411B and 1411C are "regular" classes, and thus are subject to the following conditions when a student retakes them:
- Repetition of UTEP freshman level courses (1XXX): If a grade of "A","B", "C", "D", or "F" is earned when the course is repeated for the first time, the previously earned grade is automatically excluded from the GPA calculation. Both grades earned remain on the academic record and the record will be annotated with the symbol (E-Excluded) next to the first grade. The last grade earned is the official grade for a course.
- Repetition of UTEP freshman level courses (1XXX) after the first time and repetition of non-freshman level course (2XXX, 3XXX, 4XXX): All grades earned remain on the academic record and are included in the GPA calculation. Exceptional circumstances may be reviewed by the student’s academic dean in consultation with the appropriate faculty member. Grade replacement and GPA recalculation may not occur after graduation.
- A course grade received as a result of disciplinary action from the Dean of Students is not eligible for grade replacement for GPA recalculation. The record will be annotated with the symbol (D) next to the grade.
- UTEP students are cautioned that under no circumstances may a course taken at this institution and repeated at another college or university be eligible for GPA recalculation, even if the student is involved in first-time repetition of a freshman-level course (1XXX). Courses transferred to UTEP are not calculated in a student’s GPA.
The above means that you may be able to take each part-of-term section only 2 times without affecting your GPA. Also, remember that UTEP allows students to repeat a class only 3 times in total.
Grade Calculation
- To pass a particular part-of-term section, first you must score at least 60% on the exit exam. And second, you must have at least 70% overall average.
- The Exit Exam counts 50% of each part-of-term grade.
You must pass the exit exam with at least a 60 to pass the class. - The rest of the grade is made up of quizzes and homework.
- Students who have passed (with a "C" or better) Math 2301 or its equivalent, may start with Math 1411B..
Exit Exams
- The exit exams for each part-of-term are administered in the classrooms. The exit exam for every student in a specific part-or-term section during a specific time is the same.
- You must score at least a 60% on the exit exam.
- You may use graphing calculators on these exams.
- You may NOT use notes or your book on these exams.
- Because of the short time of each time interval, there are no make up exams for missed exit exams. If you miss an exit exam, for whatever reason, you have two options: retake the class or take and pass the online Test Out Exam for that part-of-term administered at the library.
Test-Out Exams
- Test Out exams are offered in the Library on the last Monday following each time interval.
- You must bring your exit exam to Mr. Julian Viera in order to schedule a Test Out Exam.
- You are allowed to take only the Test Out Exam for the class you did not pass.
- You may take one Test-Out Exam once and only once.
- Each Test Out Exam has 20 questions and is two hours long.
- You may use graphing calculators on these exams. We provide scratch paper.
- Improvement Test Out Exams will be offered at the end of the semester.
Continuing Students
- Continuing students start with either Math 1411B or Math 1411C during the 12:30-1:20 time slot.
- You will evaluate your instructor and the program at the end of each time interval. You may also email the director, Mr. Julian Viera if you have concerns.
- If you pass the course before the end of the semester, you may retake a previously passed part-of-term to try to improve your grade for that part-of-term. Contact Mr. Julian Viera before doing so.
- If you think that you belong in a part-of-term different from the part-of-term you are assigned, see Mr. Julian Viera, at Bell Hall 220.
- The names of all students, the parts they should be attending, their teachers, and their classroom location are located under "Find your Class" on the Calculus website. Check and see that you are attending the correct module during Time 1.
Student Email Accounts
- All Math1411 students are required to have UTEP email accounts by the end of the first week of school.
Books and Calculators
- The course text is Calculus, Eighth Edition by Larson, Hostetler, Edwards.
- The course syllabus is located online, under "Course Content".
- Graphing calculators are required for this course; purchase them early and learn to use them as soon as possible. We are using the TI-89 graphing calculator; you may use an equivalent or more advanced calculator.
Office Hours
- All the Math 1411 instructors are your instructors: you may go to any of them for help. You may visit their offices, telephone them, or email them. Their office locations, office hours, telephone numbers, and email addresses are posted online
Drop Date
- Students new to the course may drop the course with an automatic grade of "W" if you drop by October 29, 2010.
- Please check a current course schedule to find the drop date for parts-of-term classes (at UTEP's Term Information page)
Switching Classes
