Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers programs of instruction leading to a Master of Arts degree in Teaching (MAT) with a major in Mathematics.

This program provides an opportunity for students interested in teaching entry level mathematics courses at the college level or teaching mathematics at the high-school level to earn an advanced degree with a primary emphasis on mathematics at a level that will be of value in their classrooms. The program is one designed to give students a broad background in graduate content Mathematics, and in mathematics teaching and learning.

The Department has set aside several Teaching Assistantships for students enrolled full-time in the MAT program. Teaching Assistants are required to enroll in a minimum of 10 semester hours and are scheduled up to 20 hours/week of work in the department. The duties of a Teaching Assistant may include grading papers, assisting professors with pre-calculus and calculus courses, and holding tutorial sessions for students.

Information on MAT-Cohort designed specifically for in-service teachers.

Prior to admission, students must have completed the calculus sequence together with 12 semester hours of advanced courses in Mathematics (3300 or 3400 level). The student’s GPA for these 12 hours must be at least 3.0. (Students with a bachelor's degree, who do not satisfy these requirements, must first enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate program at UTEP.)  MAT does not offer certification.

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a major in Mathematics is available in both a thesis (recommended) and a non-thesis option. The thesis option requires 24 hours of course work plus the completion of a six-semester hour thesis in Mathematics Education, while the non-thesis option requires 36 hours of coursework. A maximum of nine of these hours may be taken from specified 3300 and 4000 level courses. Each student must have his or her courses approved by the Graduate Advisor in order to ensure adequate breadth of courses in the mathematical sciences.

Suggestions for a study plan:

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is conveniently located in Bell Hall, across the street from the campus library, a student cafeteria, and museum. Graduate student offices are intermingled with faculty offices. All of the offices are separate from classrooms creating an environment conducive to learning.

The department has its own computing resources in Bell Hall. There are Dell computers available to use in each of the graduate students' offices. Bell Hall houses the Math ACES (Academic Center for Engineers and Scientists) computer lab, which is open to any student majoring in Science or Engineering. The software available in the computer lab includes Microsoft Office, Mathematica, Minitab, SAS, SPSS, SPlus, and Geometer's Sketchpad.

The department is committed to diversifying the ethnicity, race, and gender of the nation's pool of mathematical scientists. All individuals are encouraged to apply and inquiries are welcome.
