Financial Assistance

Many school districts offer tuition reimbursement for teachers pursuing a MAT degree. Your school district website or the human resources department will have additional information. Generally, all teachers are notified of the opportunity prior to the start of the school year.

Effective Fall, 2008, the US Department of Education offers TEACH grants for teachers earning a MAT. Teachers who intend to teach for at least 2 years after completion do not have to repay the grant. This is NOT a need based grant. To be eligible, graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and attend full time (6 credit hours per semester). MAT Math or Sciense students are eligible to apply to SABE MAS Learning Academy, a College of Science program designed to strengthen interdisciplinary math, science, and technology content knowledge and pedagogy in El Paso area teachers. The Academy meets one evening every other week to explore subjects of importance in the classroom and design lesson plans around those. Teachers with two or more years of teaching experience accepted to the SABE MAS program earn an annual stipend. For more information, contact sabemas@utep.edu, or visit the SABE MAS web page at http://science2.utep.edu/sabemas.
