Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the MAT-Science?
A: Master of Arts in Teaching Science. This degree requires 36 semester hours of coursework. You select an area of emphasis from Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics or Earth Science.
Q: When are classes scheduled?
A: The MAT is a part-time, two-year master's program. Classes are held at times convenient to working teachers - summers, evenings, and possibly weekends.
Q: Do I have to be a certified science teacher?
A: No. The program is specially designed for high-school science teachers with at least two years of teaching experience. If you are not certified, you are encouraged to obtain a teaching certificate in science upon completion of the program. Please consult the College of Education about getting your certification.
Q: Is there a minimum skill level I should have entering the MAT program?
A: Freshman level science courses in your area of emphasis are recommended. Leveling courses may be required.
Q: Where can I apply?
A: You must apply through UTEP's Graduate School.
