Typesetting Mathematics via Latex Using ASCII Editor Emacs/Epoch on the Suns
Eugene F. Schuster
June 22, 1999
Abstract:
This document presents a short introduction to the
mathematical text processing system TEX as implemented on the SUN
Network in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at UTEP using
Epoch, an Open Windows version of the ASCII editor Emacs, and the
macro Latex to facilitate document preparation. This writeup is
intended as an aid to new T.A.'s, faculty and staff who would like to
use TEX or Emacs in writing mathematics, research reports, theses,
making overheads, preparing instruction material and computer
programs, computer demonstrations, and in helping students prepare
class reports, resumes and letters of application for job searches.
Hopefully, this document will allow them to progress rapidly to the
stage where they can read the technical manuals and begin using the
system. Since Emacs running in Solaris 2.6 is menu driven, this report
will be of limited use in this environment until the function key
binding compatibility problems are resolved. These function
key bindings, templates and examples allow the novice to
quickly begin using Emacs. Please report any errors
or suggestions for revisions to me at gene@math.utep.edu.
