¡BIENVENIDOS ! & WELCOME to  GEPCTM:

Greater El Paso Council of Teachers of Mathematics

P.O. Box 972771   El Paso, TX 79997          gepctm@yahoo.com

GEPCTM serves mathematics teachers in the El Paso region (e.g., ESC Region 19).  GEPCTM has generally held meetings once every month or two, usually on weekday evenings. Membership in GEPCTM is very affordable, so please support and participate in our region’s efforts and join GEPCTM today by clicking here!   Here is a past issue of the GEPCTM newsletter.  GEPCTM is an affiliated local chapter (#171) with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), which has annual national and regional meetings. GEPCTM is also affiliated on the state level with the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics (TCTM).  Each July, TCTM holds the Conference for Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT), rotating between Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston, and scholarships can support newer teachers wanting to attend.

GEPCTM itself generally holds a fall membership kickoff party in September and a one-day annual conference for mathematics teachers in October at the Transmountain Campus of El Paso Community College (9570 Gateway Blvd. North; next to Cohen Stadium). The conference is an excellent opportunity for this area's teachers to get professional development experiences, networking, and knowledge in one day without having to cover classes or pay for airfare or lodging!

September 2012 update:  GEPCTM President Craig Rhoads (crhoad@sisd.net) reports that this year, instead of holding a conference, we are expanding our reach by testing a feeder-pattern meet along with a UIL practice meet covering all paper-tested UIL events. If successful, next year we will offer to help high school math teams host their own feeder-pattern meets. We believe this strategy will strengthen the region's UIL competitiveness as well as serve the collective spirit and academic culture of the feeder-pattern campuses. Likewise, branching out as an operator of full UIL meets gives GEPCTM credibility in the community and provides practice competitions for events that do not usually compete before the final meet in our region.   The combo UIL and feeder-pattern meet is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9th at Americas HS.  Additionally, our regular slate of monthly math meets will include tests for Science and for Computer Science.  The first meet of the year will be Sat. Sept 22nd at Americas High School and the meet schedule for the rest of the year will be created that day in the coaches grading room during the Number Sense test. For more information, contact Francisco Nolasco at fnolas@sisd.net, 373-2784 or 937-2800.
